The property also has extraordinary Hollywood ties as it was previously owned by actress, musician, and starlet Lizabeth Scott. Occasionally referred to as Elvis’s second leading lady, the two starred in Paramount’s 1957’s musical comedy Loving You. Cast at a time when both of their Hollywood careers were headed in different directions, Presley, in just his second picture, was only 22 years old with a promising film career ahead of him. Scott, then 34, was making what would be her next to last appearance in a film career that began in 1945. Scott and her home at 8277 Hollywood Boulevard frequently played host to Elvis and his entourage during the production of Loving You and although Elvis would later garner a reputation for wooing his co-stars, Lizabeth kept things professional even becoming close with Elvis’s mother, Gladys. Scott is later quoted as admiring the deep relationship between mother and son, saying, “Their relationship was so obvious. It wasn’t just verbal. It was nonverbal, and by that I mean not only could you see it, you could feel it. She had great power over him, and he submitted so willingly because he loved her so deeply. There was a tenderness that spoke in his eyes, and in her eyes. There was a devotion. He loved her with a passion, and she adored him….” Scott’s star can be found in the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1624 Vine Street in Hollywood.
The iconic property is set atop a lengthy gated driveway and offers stunning 180-degree vistas stretching from downtown Los Angeles all the way over to Catalina Island.
As you approach, mature azaleas frame the front lawn and ornamental Chinese Elm pave the way, leading to an inviting porch and a charming Dutch door.
Designed by Robert Byrd before mid-century modern style began to take hold in Los Angeles in 1940, this is arguably considered the best example of Byrd’s signature farmhouse style (also sometimes referred to as California Ranch) on one of the only predominantly flat lots in this tony enclave of the Hollywood Hills. Although Robert Byrd had a long and distinguished career as an architect of quality homes in Southern California, he was not a licensed architect (AIA). As a building designer, he built homes from the 1920s through the 1970s, with his son, Gary. According to Robert Byrd Homes, “Many elements of a Byrd Home, such as exposed wood beams, turned posts, rock and flagstone finishes, and whimsical brickwork are familiar to those in Hollywood, Pacific Palisades and Beverly Hills.” Personally, I have seen several Byrd homes in the valley. Further, “Byrd homes were built in the California Ranch style of architecture and featured natural materials that lent the homes a comfortable, symbiotic and timeless ambience. Other distinctive characteristics include round chimneys, curved walkways, indoor/outdoor grills, Dutch doors, custom woodwork, and stained-glass windows. Robert Byrd also designed and built furniture. Many of these custom pieces can still be found in his homes, like a dining room table and chairs, or a coffee table or bookcase.”
The lovely living room features a gas fireplace, original built-in shelving perfect for the bibliophile, and redwood beams and paneling.
It’s easy to see why Lizabeth held al fresco soireés so often. The home remains perfect for entertaining. The living room seamlessly leads to an expansive backyard with a relaxing kidney-shaped pool and brick patio, mature fruit trees, and a towering 25 foot ficus hedge that provides absolute privacy. A must in this neighborhood of the hills.
Back inside, you’ll find an office alcove with amazingly unique built-in storage.
An expansive dining room with chic modern light fixtures and sweeping views of the lush and grassy front yard.
The bespoke chef’s kitchen features custom cabinetry, soapstone countertops, top-of-the-line Sub Zero, Wolf, and Miele appliances.
And plenty more unique and convenient attributes courtesy of the architect to discover such as a separate scullery with thoughtful custom elements like built-in cutlery trays, an onion drawer, hidden microwave nook, and utility closet.
A powder room completes the main floor.
Upstairs, an enchanting primary suite featuring vaulted ceilings, panoramic city views, a walk-in closet, and a newly redesigned bathroom with soapstone countertops.
A charming guest bedroom overlooks the verdant backyard.
And has some of the best city-to-ocean views on offer rivaling perhaps only the Chateau Marmont down the way.
The guest bedroom is acompanied by its tastefully appointed en suite bathroom.
This spectacular one-of-a-kind property is ideally located near the vibrant Sunset Strip, the residence embodies timeless elegance and offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of Hollywood history, a private sanctuary where luxury living meets iconic Golden Era glamour. The home exudes silver screen royalty, fit for The King, and queen alike.
